Aristotle’s Presence in Opera Between Theory and Practice

Opera from the Greek: Studies in the Poetics of Appropriation, βιβλιοκρισία[3]

H ΙΣΧΥΡΗ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΣΥΣΧΕΤΙΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΧAΪΔΩΣ - AΪΝΤΑ ΤΟΥ VERDI [Verdi, Auber and the Aida-type (.. and Lord Byron )] ΠΑΡΑΓΓΕΛΘΕΙΣΑΣ ΑΠΟ ΤΟΝ ΠΑΥΛΟ ΠΑΥΛΙΔΗ![8]

AI responses

Paul Draneht (1815-1894) was born in Nicosia (Cyprus) as Pavlos Pavlidis - ΠΑΥΛΟΣ ΠΑΥΛΙΔΗΣ. He was the child of a Greek Christian Orthodox family who fled Cyprus due to the clashes between Greeks and Turks, and took refuge in Egypt. Muhammad (Mehmet) Ali Pasha (the Khedive of Egypt) sent him to study in France. Trusted by the Khedive (who awarded him the titles of Bey and Pasha), Paul Draneht participated in the negotiations regarding the opening of the Suez Canal.

He became superintendent of the Egyptian Opera Theatre and commissioned the opera Aida to the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. The Aida opened in Cairo on 24 December 1871.[10].

HERAION OF SAMOS

Kouka 1996

I.1., I.2.) und Methode (Kap. II.) untersucht.

III.3.2.1.). Ein kommunaler Speicher konnte ebenso in Heraion I identifiziert werden (Kap.

VI.3.2.).

besten entgegen kamen (Kap. IV.4.).

(Kap.

Emporio I nicht überstehen.

IN ENGLISH

The extensively excavated EBA settlements on the northeastern Aegean islands were examined in this study within the framework of the objectives (Chapters I.1., I.2.) and methods (Chapter II.) described above. The study revealed the development of economic, political, and social structures in the individual settlements, the dynamics of island societies in comparison with those on the mainland, and the exchange mechanisms between the northeastern, central, and southern Aegean settlements during the Early Bronze Age (Chapters III.4., IV.4., V.4., VI.4.). Furthermore, both in the introduction (Chapter I.2.) and in the presentation of the aforementioned settlements, the cultural characteristics of Troy and the settlements recently excavated in the North and East Aegean were discussed, leading to a revision of the character, geographical distribution, and consequently also the definition of the cultural area formerly referred to as "Trojan" (Map 1, Table 1).

This study initially examined the prehistoric settlements on the islands of Lemnos, Lesbos, Chios, and Samos. These are all medium-sized islands located close to the neighboring mainland of Asia Minor, but not in direct proximity to each other (Map 1). Their settlement occurred at least in the frontiers of the Aegean Sea, but especially in the north-eastern Aegean Sea. In order to trace the settlement patterns on the individual islands, the relevant natural conditions were presented in the respective chapters:

Geomorphology, geology, climate, soil quality, and vegetation. This made it possible to identify the economic forms and reconstruct the prehistoric settlement pattern on each island using the settlement data available to date and the demographic data from historical times. This established the framework for understanding the development of the settlements under study (Chapters III.1., IV.1., V.1., VI.1.).

The comprehensive investigation of the settlements of Poliochni, Thermi, Emporio, and Heraion was conducted under the following aspects: organization of the settlement site, building, find, and functional analysis (Chapter II.4.).

Poliochni and Emporio were already settled in the NL/CH {Neolithic period (Black Period, 3700-3200 BC}, while Thermi {The settlement was dated from the Middle to Late Neolithic II,} and Heraion were only settled at the beginning of the FB. The architectural layers of Poliochni comprise the largest section of the FB; Thermi was only settled in the first half of the 3rd millennium BC, while the entire FB was recorded in Emporio and Heraion. Poliochni Giallo was destroyed by earthquakes and abandoned, while Thermi was abandoned earlier than Poliochni during Phase V. Both sites were not repopulated until the MB (Table 1).

The presence of a political leadership was evident in all settlements from the earliest part of the MB. This was evident in the construction of communal structures such as enclosure or fortification walls, buildings with special functions, utility structures (irrigation and water disposal systems), and changes in building schemes.

All settlements were surrounded by a wall intended to protect against flooding (Poliochni, Heraion) and external threats. Poliochni was already fortified in the Azzurro Phase, Thermi only in Phases IIIA and IV, Emporio in Phase III, and Heraion in the period "earlier than Heraion I." The fortification character of these structures is demonstrated by the massive gate complexes (Poliochni, Thermi IVB-V, Heraion), as well as the outer walls and casemates that served as sentry posts (Thermi V). Intensive expansion and reconstruction work was carried out on the fortification walls of Poliochni Verde, Thermi IVB, and Emporio III, which were contemporary with Troia I-late and Liman Tepe FB II.1 During this period, these settlements had achieved extraordinary economic prosperity, making them competitors in the region. Similar fortification measures from the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC are evident in the settlements of Skala Sotiros and Limenaria on Thasos, Palamari on Skyros, Mikro Vouni on Samothrace, Yenibademli Höyük on Imbros, and Myrina on Lemnos.2 Already at the beginning of the FB Troia, Bakla Tepe, Kale Tepe, and Liman Tepe3 possessed powerful fortifications, which indicate the economic growth of settlements in the maritime zone of Asia Minor. Among them, Liman Tepe is particularly noteworthy: the fortification with enormous horseshoe-shaped bastions enclosed the so-called "lower city" and the harbor4.

The buildings with a special function are the earliest municipal building 14 (the "Bouleuterion") attested in the Aegean, which was used in all FB phases of Poliochnis, and the communal granary 28, which was in use in the Azzurro and Verde phases (Plan 4). Building 31, the [XIII...] Building 31, which was located west of the communal granary in Phase 13, can be ascribed a similar function (Chapter III.3.2.1.). A communal granary was also identified in Heraion I (Chapter VI.3.2.). The corridor-like building discovered in Liman Tepe (FB II) should also be interpreted as a communal building based on its location, building type, construction method, and its context.5

Buildings of political and economic importance are those that are distinguished by their location in the settlement plan, their construction method, and their duration of use across all phases, such as Building 317 at Poliochni Azzurro-Giallo, Insula VIII at Poliochni Giallo (Plan 10), Building A1-A2 at Thermi I-IIIB, Building Æ at Thremi V, and the "Cyclopean Building" at Heraion III (Plans 13, 32, 51).

The Megaron IIA, built in the fortified citadel of Troia II, should also be assigned to this category (Plan 56b-c).

The supply structures include the wells examined at Thermi I, Poliochni Azzurro-Giallo, and Emporio V-I, around which stone-paved squares were built. Furthermore, at Poliochni Rosso and especially at Poliochni Giallo, the stone-lined and covered canals revealed an advanced sewage system, representing the earliest evidence of sewerage systems in the Aegean. 6 Similar installations were also discovered at Palamari on Skyros. 7

With regard to settlement planning and settlement patterns, Poliochni Azzurro-giallo demonstrates a building arrangement in unequal-sized insulae and represents the earliest example of the "linear building pattern" in the prehistoric Aegean (Chapter III.3.3., Plans 7, 9). In Thermi I-IIIB, the "radial" building principle is recognized (Plan 15), 8 which was replaced in Thermi IVA/IVB by the "orthogonal/rectangular" (Plan 27), 9 and in Thermi V by the "linear building pattern" (Plan 30). 10 Thermi IVA/B represents the earliest evidence of development in equal-sized islands in the Aegean. These two turning points in Thermi's architectural history have been linked and explained by the constant population growth, which was best accommodated by building schemes with expansion possibilities in all directions (Chapter IV.4.). An arrangement of freestanding buildings and blocks similar to the radial construction principle was documented at Heraion III-IV (Chapter VI.4., Plans 50, 52). Finally, the building scheme at Emporio shows a building arrangement in residential blocks, the exact form of which cannot be reconstructed at the current state of research (Chapter V.4., Plan 37). Radial building patterns are evident at Beåik Tepe, Troia I-IIf (Plan 56a-b), Bakla Tepe, and Asomatos on Rhodes, while a building pattern in unequally sized insulae can be observed at Troia IIg (Plan 56c), Liman Tepe, and Palamari.11

Data on burial customs in the settlements examined are limited to isolated intramural burials, including a few in vessels or pithoi12 and two graves located in the immediate vicinity of the settlement (Heraion IV, Emporio II).13 These are predominantly children's burials. Due to the lack of regular adult burials in the North Aegean, extramural burials are assumed. Extramural necropolises of the FB II are known so far from western and southern Asia Minor (Ilžpžnar-Hacilartepe, Yortan, Babaköy, Bakla Tepe, Harmanören, Demircihüyük-Saržket, Küçükhöyük, Kusura, Iasos, and Karataå-Semayük) and, more recently, from western Macedonia (Kitrini Limni) and Chalcidice (Ajios Mamas). Since intramural pithos burials have been documented in Troia Ib, Emporio II, and Heraion IV, and extramural necropolises are known from the neighboring coastal regions of Asia Minor and Macedonia, pithos necropolises should also be expected in the North Aegean settlements.14

The analysis of the types of finds presented at all settlements has shown that the economy of the island settlements was based on three areas: agriculture, crafts, and trade. Other documented economic activities included hunting, fishing, fur and wood processing, shipbuilding, weaving, and textile processing. Textile production was intensively practiced in all households at Poliochni during all construction phases and also included the process of dyeing; its products represented trade items (Chapter III.3.2.3.). The manufacture of large storage vessels [XIV..] (Thermi I, Poliochni), bone, stone, and flint tools, as well as metallurgy represented further specialized activities. The following workshops were identified within the settlements15:

Workshop for the production of bone tools: Poliochni azzurro, Insula I-II (Plan 4).

Workshops for the production of stone tools: Shaft-hole axes were produced in Insulae XVII–XVIII and grooved mallets in rooms 1111–1112 of Poliochni Verde (Plan 6). Shaft-hole axes and flint artifacts were produced in room 816c of Poliochni Rosso.

Workshops for the production of stone tools: Shaft-hole axes were produced in Insulae XVII-XVIII, and grooved mallets in Rooms 1111-1112 of Poliochni Verde (Plan 6). Shaft-hole axes and flint artifacts were produced in Room 816c of Poliochni Rosso (Plan 8). The production of flint tools was also confirmed northwest of Insula VI of Poliochni Giallo (Plan 10) and in Emporio II (Plan 42).

Metal workshop: In Poliochni Azzurro in Insula I-II and southeast of Section 12 of the fortification wall, in Room 1119 of the Verde phase, and in Rooms 424, 502-504, 609, and Building IA of the Giallo phase (Plans 4, 6, 8, 10). Finally, metallurgical work was carried out in buildings 605 and 832, from Poliochni Azzurro to Giallo. In Thermi I-IVB, a "metal craftsmen's quarter" was identified in Area E (Plans 14, 23, 26), which, together with the examples from Poliochni (Buildings 605 and 832, Plans 6, 8, 10), provides evidence of the hereditary transmission of "profession," land, and status.16 Metal production was also documented in Thermi II in Area Ã1, in Thermi IIA in K, in Thermi IVA in P4, in Areas Z and Ð of Thermi V, and not least in House VII of Emporio IV.17 This shows that, at least in Poliochni, metal production was carried out by several craftsmen and did not represent a monopoly. In Poliochni Giallo, further specialization in the manufacture of decorative pins and tools was identified.

Local production of metal artifacts, documented since the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC,18 is documented on the northeastern Aegean islands by the equipment required for crushing (stone hammers) and melting (clay nozzles, crucibles, and spoons) the metal, as well as for forming tools (casting molds), and by the melted products (slag), discovered at Poliochni Azzurro, Thermi I, and Emporio V.19 Further evidence for this is provided by corresponding finds from the contemporaneous island settlements at Yenibademli Höyük and Myrina.20 The metal artifacts and the equipment required for their production from Troia I, Beåik Tepe, Bakla Tepe, and Liman Tepe21 further point to a similar and parallel growth of metallurgy on the western coast of Asia Minor during the FB I. Based on the chemical analyses of metal tools, a steady increase in the use of tin bronzes, from Poliochni azzurro to giallo and Thermi I-V, can be observed in metal production.

22 A closer examination of the results of the chemical analyses of the artifacts examined23 further reveals that tin alloys were preferred in the manufacture of tools and weapons, while copper and arsenic alloys were used for jewelry.

Regarding the development of tin-bronze metallurgy in the North Aegean during the FB II and the outstanding contribution of Poliochni to bronze metallurgy in the rest of the Aegean,24 it must be emphasized, based on the lead isotope analyses of the bronze finds from Poliochni, Thermis, and Troy, that the lead they contain comes from geologically much older sources than the known deposits in the Aegean and Asia Minor that were exploited during the Troy II period.25 These sources are said to be located in Central Asia, as evidenced by recent studies in Tajikistan (Muzhiston) and Uzbekistan (Karnab). 26 The facts presented lead to a revision of the previously postulated thesis of a local development of tin-bronze metallurgy in the North Aegean, as well as the controversial discussions [XV..] about the origin of the tin used in the FB Aegean. 27 The search for new metal sources and a resulting expansion of the North Aegean trade network to the east can be discerned. In this regard, the role of the previously known powerful port cities of Troy and Liman Tepe in Western Asia Minor as important stations and links in the trade network between Anatolia and the Aegean should be emphasized.

The acquisition and use of finished tin-bronze alloys for the production of durable tools on the island, however, does not call into question the technological knowledge of the metalworkers of Thermi and Poliochni. It appears that these same island craftsmen exported such alloys as part of trade relations to the Central and South Aegean. Evidence for this is provided by the comparative study of chemical, trace element, and lead isotope analysis data from artifacts from Troia, Poliochni Giallo, and Kastri on Syros, which demonstrate a chemical and isotopic relationship.29 This is additional evidence of the intensive trade relations between the North Aegean and Western Anatolia with the Cyclades and the South Aegean, which, during the so-called Lefkandi I-Kastri phase (Table 1), included new drinking and eating customs in addition to the supply of new metal alloys.30 However, contacts between these regions began as early as the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC and were intended to acquire raw materials, particularly metals such as copper, arsenic, silver, and lead, from northwestern Anatolia (Troas), Chalcidice, Thasos, and the Cyclades (Kythnos, Siphnos).31

The metalworkers of Thermi, Poliochni, Emporio, and Heraion had themselves taken care of the acquisition of valuable metals and tin alloys and therefore also partially assumed responsibility for trade relations. This was the conclusion reached by the analysis of finds and functions undertaken for the settlements mentioned. Seals and most of the representative and prestige objects were found precisely in the settlement areas where metallurgical activities had been documented, primarily metal jewelry (bronze pins, lead and tin bracelets), bones, daggers, marble idols and bowls from the Cyclades, and imported ceramics.32 This means that the metalworker families, some of whom also engaged in trade, enjoyed particular wealth and a status distinct from that of other residents. In addition to the political power mentioned above, a further differentiation in North Aegean societies can be identified: that of the wealthy families of metalworkers and traders.

The prosperity achieved by Poliochni and Thermi in particular around the middle of the 3rd millennium BC

allowed the hoarding of bronze implements. This is demonstrated by the lead and tin bracelets from Thermi IVA, as well as the hoards from the "Potter's Pool" of Thermi IVB and Room 829 of Poliochni Rosso.33 These hoards, as well as the treasures from Troy,34 reveal a frequent occurrence of tin bronzes, which demonstrates the appreciation of tin, which stems not only from the functional importance of this raw material, but also from the knowledge of its origins from distant regions.

Poliochni appears to have occupied a special position in the economic structure of the North Aegean. From the beginning of the Roman Empire, the strongly developed primary economic factor here was able to maintain intensive trade relations with northwest Asia Minor, the Aegean islands, and the Greek mainland. These relations were prepared in the verde phase, developed further in the rosso phase, and reached their peak in the giallo phase (bronzes, ceramics). These relations were primarily concerned with the export of local products (e.g., textiles) and the acquisition of raw materials such as obsidian, metals and dyes such as malachite, azurite, and luxury objects. In its final settlement phase, Poliochni appears to have assumed the leading role in trade between northwest Asia Minor and Lemnos on the one hand, and between the northern and southern Aegean on the other. It is not an exaggeration to assume that, due to its geographical location, Poliochni was a stronger trading power than Troy, which derived its local importance in the Troad primarily from the surrounding countryside. In this powerful island society of Poliochni, a social differentiation could be identified, comprising a political leadership, a wealthy elite of metal craftsmen and merchants (“gold hoard” from Room 643), and many equally wealthy artisan families (Chapter III.3.5.4.). [XVI…
Troy, on the other hand, appears to have exploited the rich hinterland with its deposits of flint, copper, precious metals, and semiprecious stones, as the proven diversity of raw materials and find types in the Troy II layers shows. Continental trade routes from eastern and southern Asia Minor led to Troy and the west coast of Asia Minor, bringing not only raw materials but also new technologies (potter's wheel in Troy IIb), measuring systems (hematite weights), ideas (vessel shapes), and artisans (goldsmiths). However, the acquisition of goods and ideas did not provide a significant impetus for local material culture, as can be seen both in the architecture and construction technology (Chapter III.3.5.3.2., Plan 56) and in the conservatism of ceramic technology. In contrast, Poliochni demonstrates flexibility in the adoption and progressive adaptation of cultural traits from the Aegean and Asia Minor, which can be traced both in the architecture and in many find types (e.g., high-quality ceramics). It can therefore be described as an important maritime trading post with an almost urban character (Chapter III.3.5.4.).

The organization of the settlements examined exhibits all the characteristics of an early urban center. The distribution of wealth testifies to societies with highly developed political, economic, and social structures that transcended the village level and transformed into competitive settlements in the North Aegean. The abandonment of the settlement of Thermi V is evidence of this competition. The existence of a political power and the prosperity that Thermi had achieved in Phase V increasingly posed a threat to the settlement, threatening from both land and sea. The growing threat to Thermi from equally wealthy or stronger communities developing on the islands (e.g., Poliochni) or on the mainland of Asia Minor (Troy, Bakla Tepe, Liman Tepe) led to the relocation of the relatively large population of Thermi V to the island's interior. The comparative study of the island settlements of Poliochni, Thermi, Emporio, and Heraion, as well as Troy, and the more limitedly researched settlements such as Kumtepe, Beåik-Yassž-Tepe, Larisa on the Hermos, Bayraklž/Smyrna, Bakla Tepe, Kale Tepe, Liman Tepe/Klazomenai on the west coast of Asia Minor, Protesilaos on the Kallipolis Peninsula, Myrina and Koukonisi on Lemnos, Methymna and Kourtir on Lesbos, Yenibademli Höyük on Imbros, the Tenedos necropolis on Tenedos, Mikro Vouni on Samothrace, Skala Sotiros and Limenaria on Thasos, Palamari on Skyros, and Asomatos on Rhodes

(Chapter I.2.) has revealed common cultural elements in the 3rd millennium BC that can be traced across a broad geographical area. This area extends beyond the Troad and the islands of Lemnos, Lesbos, Chios, and Samos, located near the coast of Asia Minor, and extends further north (Thasos, Samothrace, Imbros, Tenedos), west (Skyros), and south (Izmir region, Rhodes, Iasos) (Maps 1 and 2). Common cultural elements are evident in settlement patterns, settlement planning and building forms, the existence of fortifications and communal buildings, burial customs, economic factors—primarily metallurgy and trade—and social structures.

As early as the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC, one (Mikro Vouni, Yenibademli Höyük) or several settlements (e.g., Skala Sotiros and Limenaria on Thasos, Myrina and Poliochni on Lemnos, Thermi and Kourtir on Lesbos) existed on the islands. These settlements, as far as excavated, exhibit a developed settlement plan, contain enclosure walls and communal buildings, and their finds provide evidence of local metalworking and trading activities (see above). According to current research, the settlement pattern of the FB I that can be reconstructed for the coastal zone of Asia Minor suggests settlements of equal size in the Troad (Beåik-Yassž-Tepe, Troia I early-middle) and several smaller settlements in the Izmir area35 (Map 1). Among the latter, Bakla Tepe and Liman Tepe differ in their building plan and their fortification system36.

At the beginning of the FB II, increasing growth of the island settlements is observed, reflected in their architecture and economy (Table 1, Map 1). The population increase led to the expansion (Poliochni verde, Myrina) or even the replanning of the settlements (Thermi IVA-IVB).

The development of metal technology and intensive trade favored the economic development of those settlements whose importance in the region was determined by the expansion and/or strengthening of the fortifications (Polioch

The development of metal technology and intensive trade favored the economic development of those settlements, whose importance in the region is evident in the expansion and/or strengthening of fortifications (Poliochni Verde, Thermi IVA-IVB, Palamari I, Skala Sotiros A) as well as in sudden destruction (Emporio IV). Similar characteristics are also observed at Troia I-late, Liman Tepe, and Bakla Tepe. The latter settlements developed into fortified, densely built-up regional centers in the FB II, such as Troia in the Troad, Liman Tepe37 and Bakla Tepe near Izmir; however, some small fortified settlements, such as Kale Tepe, remained important as control points due to their high elevation38. These features indicate a cultural "koine" in the [XVII..] region. The imported finds discovered at all sites in the North and East Aegean39 – especially from the Cyclades – further indicate the important role this region played in the Aegean trade network around the middle of the 3rd millennium BC and its contribution to the emergence of an "international spirit"40 according to Renfrew.

In the advanced FB II, which includes Poliochni Rosso, Thermi V, Emporio III-II, Heraion I, early Troia II, and Liman Tepe (FB II) (Table 1), the climax of this cultural "koine" is reached, which is, however, characterized by an increase in economic competition between these settlements.

Further settlement expansions (Poliochni Rosso, Myrina), new settlement patterns (Troia II-early, Thermi V), strengthening of fortification walls with bastions (Liman Tepe, Palamari II, Skala Sotiros B) and protected gates (Poliochni Rosso, Thermi V, Heraion I), growth in tin-bronze metallurgy, increased imports, and the accumulation of prestige objects (Poliochni Rosso, Thermi IVB) reflect prosperity and the associated changes in social structures. At the same time, they explain, on the one hand, the growing number of coastal settlements on Lemnos, the most important island for maritime trade in the North Aegean (Map 6). On the other hand, they explain the abandonment of such a prosperous settlement as Thermi V, which could not survive the increasing competition in the region.

In the late FB II, which is contemporaneous with Poliochni giallo and Troia II (middle-late), other wealthy settlements such as Emporio I were unable to survive the competition. This may be explained by the excessive growth of the port city of Liman Tepe and the existence of other important settlements in the Izmir region (Bakla Tepe). These settlements, especially Liman Tepe, played an extremely important role in the trade network between the west coast of Asia Minor and Anatolia and the Aegean Sea, as confirmed by imports from the Cyclades and the Greek mainland (silver needle and Cycladic pan at Bakla Tepe, sauce boats at Liman Tepe).41 In contrast to Lesbos and Chios, which appear to have lost their former importance during this period,42 Lemnos with Poliochni giallo and Koukonisi, Thasos with Skala Sotiros B, Skyros with Palamari II/III, and Samos with Heraion III-IV (Map 1) demonstrate uninterrupted and probably increasing growth, rooted in intensive maritime trade. This is the so-called Lefkandi I-Kastri phase,43 which is characterized by the presence of imported metal alloys (see above Kastri on Syros) and West Anatolian ceramics (jugs with slanted or truncated mouths, one- or two-handled funnel-neck beakers, bell-shaped cups, Depata amphikypella, flat plates)44 in the Cyclades and on the east coast of the Greek mainland (e.g., Pevkakia,45). The presence of the aforementioned finds in Cycladic settlements46, and their fortifications47 built during this phase (Kastri on Syros, Kynthos on Delos, Panormos on Naxos)48, which have similarities with the North Aegean fortifications (e.g. in Palamari, Skala Sotiros), led to the assumption of a colonization of the Cyclades by a North Aegean population49. The number of the aforementioned ceramic forms within the previously known find contexts is, at least judging by the currently published material, quite small50; this indicates their use as prestige objects, whether imported or locally produced51. The distribution of the [XVIII..] Western Anatolian pottery in the Cyclades52 and the eastern Greek mainland, as well as the existing variations53 of the above-mentioned vessel shapes, also point to two areas of origin or influence: the northeastern Aegean and the southern Aegean, or southwestern Asia Minor. The northern route likely led from Poliochni via Skyros to Thessaly, Euboea, and the northern Cyclades, while the southern route led from the Izmir region or from Cilicia via Chios, Samos, Kos, and Rhodes to the southern Cyclades. Accordingly, the existing Western Anatolian elements in the Cyclades should be seen as "... the last flicker of the 'international spirit' of Stage FK II rather than an invasion of foreign population elements..."54

In the late FB, namely in FB III, important settlements in the investigated regions, such as Troia III-IV, Liman Tepe, Bakla Tepe (FB III), Koukonisi, Palamari III, and Heraion IV, continued their existence well into the MB, while others, such as Poliochni, were abandoned due to natural disasters. The example of Poliochni and Koukonisi illustrates the competition between two settlements on the same island, with only one surviving (Map 6). After the destruction of Poliochni giallo by strong earthquakes, the settlement was abandoned for a period that corresponds to the Troia III-IV layers in the North Aegean, and was only repopulated on an extremely limited scale in the Bruno phase (Table 1). In Koukonisi, however, both of these phases are represented by two construction phases and numerous intact finds that lie directly on buildings contemporary with Poliochni giallo. Currently, they represent the richest evidence of the late 3rd millennium. on Lemnos.55

Koukonisi shows that, despite the destruction of the prosperous settlement of Poliochni, Lemnos retained its economic importance in the North Aegean and continued to play an important role in trade relations between the North and South Aegean. The finds from Mikro Vouni on Samothrace, through the number of Minoan seals and seal impressions,56 further demonstrate that the North Aegean islands were extremely important at this time, as they lay on important trade routes connecting the Southeast Balkans, the Black Sea region, and northwestern Asia Minor with the South Aegean, including Crete (Chapter III.4).

The comparative study of old and new archaeological data from settlements on islands in the North and East Aegean and in western Asia Minor led to the identification of common cultural characteristics as well as to the description of their different manifestations during the individual phases of the long Early Bronze Age. The area in which the cultural elements mentioned above appear extends beyond the Troad and the islands of Lemnos, Lesbos, Chios, and Samos, and extends further north (Thasos, Samothrace, Imbros, Tenedos), west (Skyros), and south (Izmir region, Rhodes, Caria). Consequently, to describe this dynamic and unique component of the Aegean Early Bronze Age, the term "cultural area of the North and East Aegean," which encompasses both the insular and maritime settlements of the mainland of Asia Minor, is preferred over the old term "Trojan culture."57 The recently proposed term "Maritime Troy culture" describes the "regional cultural epoch" from Troy I-III,58 which, according to new findings in Troy, is characterized by a continuity of cultural phenomena. An eastward expansion of the cultural sphere is also contradicted by recent ceramic studies, which emphasize the different character of vessel forms from the coastal region and from the continental west of Asia Minor [..XIX]

59. Finally, the old term "Trojan culture" can easily be retained to describe the settlement phases of Troy II, which, with its architecture and the numerous "treasures" of Troy IIg, undoubtedly represent a local sociopolitical phenomenon and which has no hinterland to the east in Anatolia60 (Chapter I.2.).
